Mary Jo Carlsen

Mary Jo Carlsen, originally from Montana, received her degrees from the University of Washington. After studying with Itzhak Perlman in New York, she moved to Maine in 1982. Mary Jo taught at Colby College for 20 years, and has performed as a violinist, violist, and baroque violinist in France, Italy, Canada, South Carolina, New York, Florida, and around New England. Currently she performs with Bangor Symphony, Portland Symphony, St Mary Schola, Opera Maine, Portland Ballet, and gives occasional chamber music and solo recitals. A second-generation Master Gardener, plants and landscaping are the stuff of her dreams. One of her main projects is the Hospice Memorial Healing Garden in Waterville. She's also fluent in French and is currently studying Italian. Mary Jo's baroque violin, based on and inspired by a 1649 Nicolo Amati, was made for her in 1995 by Robert Beacham of Farmington, Maine. She is most grateful to Kathryn Sytsma for her inspired performances of early music. It is wonderful to perform this music with so many friends.
